Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
In order to better protect the public and insure a higher standard of practice, most counselors in Alabama are required to be licensed. Supervision is a part of the licensure process for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC). Since 1995 Dr. Atchison has supervised associates from diverse areas of practice for their license. Areas of practice have included adolescent and adult residential treatment facilities, school settings, and out-patient treatment. Strengths and weaknesses are identified and a proposed plan of supervision is submitted. Once approval is granted by the Board of Examiners in Counseling and the Associate Licensed Counselor fee is paid, the credential (ALC) is issued. Supervision can then begin.
The time frame for supervision will vary from one ALC to another. During supervision, the ALC is required to obtain written permission to submit the client’s case for supervision with Dr. Atchison. Information about the case along with questions for supervision is submitted during scheduled weekly meetings. A discussion of the case from various counseling theories ensues with strengths, weaknesses, ethics, and suggestions for therapy identified. Any issue of countertransference is addressed and processed in order to help the ALC become a stronger and more professional counselor. Videos, audios, and session transcripts prove helpful in the supervision process when permitted. On site supervision will be considered for three or more individuals supervised in the same facility.
Play Therapy
Another area of supervision offered is for Registered Play Therapist. In addition to other requirements, Supervision is an integral part of the play therapy credentialing process. For beginning Play Therapists, supervision with Dr. Atchison begins using a Child-Centered approach. With experience the supervisee is encouraged to use more theoretical approaches and to “develop their own style”. Sand tray work can also be explored in the play therapy supervision process. On site supervision for three or more therapist at the same facility will be considered.
It is possible to combine the supervision for LPC with that of Play Therapy supervision.
