Dr. Atchison is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and attended college in the area. She received a B.S. in Child Development and a M.S. in Family Life from The University of Alabama. At the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) she received a second master’s specific to counseling. Her terminal degree was an Ed.D. in Counselor Education from The University of Alabama. Yes, she’s an Alabama fan.

She’s had many real-life experiences that enhance her counseling skills. Most clients describe her as easy to talk with. Adolescents say “she’s on my case just enough to make me think but not enough to make me mad.” Having been in private practice (her second career) sine 1992 Dr. Atchison is a clinician, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, speaker/presenter, and Undergraduate/Graduate college-level instructor at both Samford University and the University of Alabama.

A recent personal and professional accomplishment was serving as President of the Alabama Association for Play Therapy from 2002-2004 and representing the Alabama Chapter at the National Conference. In fact Dr. Atchison feels so strongly about the “power of play” that she has remodeled her office to include a large play room, sand tray room, and an observation booth used when training parents or supervising parent/child visits.

Spare time activities include aerobics, church-related activities, supporting local animal charities, watching Food TV, and taking care of her Miniature Schnauzer dogs. She also likes to watch her husband participate in local karate events.
